Ian’s Story

I was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland and studied Mathematics and Philosophy at Warwick University. During my first job, in a Medical Research group at Edinburgh University, I wrote Fortran programs to calculate Fast Fourier Transforms for a Cardiology research program. I enjoyed the computer work so much that I went on to take a Masters degree in Computer Science and I have earned my living with computers ever since.

I have worked in many areas of computing and have recently left Microsoft where I ran the internal Global Sales system. I am an expert in databases and in using them to drive eCommerce systems. I was an employee at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington from 2002 to 2009. This was an excellent opportunity for me to gain experience in large scale corporate Information Technology. Earlier, my experience was with small and medium sized business.

I am an expert at designing and building computer systems from the ground up. These days it makes sense to avoid a lot of customization since there are so many pre-built software solutions for just about every requirement but where customizations are required I am able to either build them myself or arrange and manage a cost effective solution.

My computer career has given me the opportunity to travel widely and I have lived and worked in Holland and Germany as well as in the UK and the US. I am now settled in Seattle, Washington and work as a systems consultant.
